Challenge

College Trades launched with a distinct visual identity, but the platform required a scalable system that could help users navigate complex apprenticeship pathways, educational content, and decision points. The challenge was extending the brand beyond marketing and into the product experience, creating a visual language that improved orientation, comprehension, and consistency across the site.

Approach

Building a Visual Language System

College Trades launched with an established visual identity. My role was to translate those brand elements into a scalable visual language system that could support navigation, content discovery, and educational experiences across the platform.

By extracting key geometric shapes and directional cues from the brand, I developed a visual language system that informed iconography, diagrams, instructional graphics, navigation patterns, and educational content throughout the site.

The challenge was maintaining consistency while helping users navigate a complex educational journey. The visual system was designed not only to reinforce the brand, but also to communicate pathways, progression, and decision points throughout the apprenticeship process.

The result was a flexible design system that extended beyond marketing and became an active part of the user experience. The visual language helped reduce complexity, guiding users through apprenticeship pathways while making information easier to understand and navigate.

Building a Visual Vocabulary

The College Trades brand provided a set of geometric forms and directional shapes that communicated movement, progression, and pathways. I expanded these foundational elements into a reusable iconography system that could support content, navigation, instructional materials, and future platform growth.

Rather than creating standalone illustrations, the goal was to establish a consistent visual vocabulary. Each icon was built from the same underlying forms, creating immediate recognition while helping users understand different topics and areas of the site.

The resulting system allowed new content and experiences to be introduced without reinventing visual patterns, strengthening both usability and brand cohesion across the platform.

Created a scalable iconography system that improved recognition, orientation, and content discoverability.

Outcomes

The visual language evolved beyond a branding exercise and became a functional part of the experience. By establishing reusable patterns rooted in the brand identity, the platform gained a scalable system that supported navigation, content discovery, educational resources, and future growth. The result was a more cohesive experience that helped users understand complex apprenticeship pathways while maintaining consistency across the product.
